Fun Friday!

In honor of the work week nearly being over for those normal 9-5ers, I’m going to have the first Barn Manager Blog Contest. The rules are pretty simple… I want to know everything you can tell me about your horse is 250 words or less. Some things to include are name, age, breed, how you got them, what they excel at, and their fears/dislikes. Feel free to adlib at will, as long is it remains under the 250 word limit. You can also (are actually encouraged to) include a picture! The contest will run for exactly one week and the winner will be announced next Friday, March 18th. The following week the winner will have the honor of their horse being featured as the Horse of Week and will get the chance to write up an entire profile with pictures for everyone to see.

Please submit all entries into the comment section of this blog post. If for some reason the comments aren’t working (they have been a little quirky lately) you can send me an e-mail at bayhorsegirl10@yahoo.com . Remember, the easiest way to leave a comment is to become follower of the Barn Manager Blog! It isn’t that hard, I promise, and you can do it either through Facebook or Google.

Finally, the horse you submit does not have to be your own. It can be a favorite lesson horse, a horse you lease, or a horse you wish you had. Just remember that if you use pictures of a horse that isn’t yours you have permission to use them.

Good luck!

  1. *EXAMPLE ENTRY*

Darwin is an eight year old 17.1H bay thoroughbred gelding with a star. He looks like a model, with legs up to his ears and a very feminine face. Darwin is not the most athletic of horses, and I don't jump him for fear of him literally breaking a leg. Case in point -- two months ago I was free lunging him in the outdoor ring. A simple x-rail was set up on the longside that he could have easily gone around. Instead he panicked, jumped it with both front legs locked straight out together, crash landed afterwards and rolled through the board rail fence.

Despite being the tallest horse at the barn, Darwin is the epitome of a gentle giant. He loves children and will give them hugs or nibble at their hair. He enjoys his daily playtime out in the field with Harry, his four year old QH friend, and they love their King of the Hill game, hiding halters in the run in sheds, and chewing each others blankets to smithereens.

Darwin is absolutely terrified of the following: ponies, golf carts, the white hay shed, palomino horses, paint horses, gray horses, the blue bench on the side of the outdoor ring, the indoor ring in its entirety, pigeons (literally -- just pigeons, any other type of bird is fine), being left out past 3PM, water, cross ties, and (most of all) when he is forced to endure the terror of being ridden outside the ring.

  2. I totally missed this till today! I'm entering my mare :)

Classy Lady is an eight year old, going on nine this summer, double registered Spotted Tennessee Walker (SSHBEA/TWHBEA) mare and is 15.2 3/4 barefoot. She's marked up about 50/50 black and white and has a star, snip, four long white stockings and her butt has panties mapped out on it (it's really cute!)

Classy Lady is my "Been there, tried it all" mare, and if she could talk, she'd probably say something to me along the lines of "You and I have been through a lot together, and most of it is your fault." I've had her since she was an older yearling, about 1 1/2, and she was my "whoops" horse when it came to training, meaning she's the first I've ever trained from scratch. I was out helping a friend catch his filly in the pasture one day, and there she was. A lot more tractable than her fractious pasturemate, she stayed right at my elbow demanding attention while I helped my friend struggle to catch his filly for the next half hour. I couldn't get her out of my mind, so I ended up selling my paid off sports car in trade for a downpayment on a brand new gas efficient civic and my girl paid in full. She wasn't cheap, but she's been one of the best purchases I've EVER made.

Classy Lady likes long walks in the woods, dinner by moonlight (over her stall door), and long naps in the sun. She's not afraid of much other than dogs, even the one that she sees EVERY DAY in the yard next to the big pasture where she likes to hang out. If I ride her around in the pasture, she will stop and startle every single time. If they come into her pasture and aren't trying to bite, she drums up some courage and will pin her ears and charge them. However, when you're riding, she'll only startle but she'll stand her ground. I'm tempted to see what she'd do if I attempted to charge some of the nitwit dogs that come out and bark at us/chase us while on the trail. I don't want her hurt, but I would like her confidence around them to increase, and what better way than a dog that runs and tucks its tail when she charges? I dunno, I think I'll stay on the safe side and avoid it unless pressed.

Classy Lady has tried western gaited pleasure, arena racing, barrel racing, trail pleasure, gaited dressage, jumping, and endurance trail riding. She excels best at trail riding, but she seems to enjoy the local yokel western gaited classes, too. I hoped she would enjoy dressage, but she's not wild about a plain snaffle instead of her reinsman leverage bit. We do it anyway, though she's not fabulous at it.

How do I post a photo on your blog? I will post a link instead: http://www.flickr.com/photos/erikahana/sets/72157625850041483/with/5416316772/

  3. Oh yeah, and she prefers to be NAKED. She will pull off any fly mask, rip up any and every blanket or fly sheet, pull off any bandage if she can (do they make those big, white, head cones for horses?), likes bareback over a saddle, and prefers a rope halter and reins to a bridle. I know that last one isn't really naked persay, but closer to it. She actually neck reins much better in just a rope halter.

  4. I actually have no idea how to allow pictures to be posted directly to the blog... I have tried asking around, but no one seems to know either.
:( If anyone DOES know and wants to clue me in, it would be greatly appreciated.
