It's... ALIVE!

Yes, I'm still here. Yes, I'm alive. Yes, I've been super-crazy-superfragilisticexpialidocious busy. Yes, when I'm not so busy I will post again. Until then, enjoy this little clip I found on youtube.

A Horse's Apology Letter

Dear Mom,

I’m sorry I tried to kill you yesterday. I really didn’t mean to, but those white cones just jumped out of NOWHERE. Have you ever been attacked by a white cone? Well, I haven’t either and I plan to keep it that way. When I jumped straight up in the air I was acting on hundreds of years of instincts from when Belgians roamed the wild plains running away from cougars and lions and those sneaky white cones.

I didn’t mean to run, but white cones are fast, Mom. At least that’s what my brother said. He’s been jumped by a white cone, you know. Reached right up and bit him when he was trotting down the long side. Mugged in plain daylight, can you believe it? He doesn’t like to talk to about it much, but I know it still gives him nightmares from the way his head twitches when he sleeps.

I think overall I recovered nicely. The yelling on your part was a little overdone. You managed to haul yourself back in the saddle before you hit that big mud puddle. Using my mane was a brilliant idea, but I gotta tell you – OUCH! Whoever said horses can’t feel when their mane is being pulled is full of manure. But I guess it will grow back. Eventually.

You know, the more that I think about it, the more I think I actually did a good deed. I know you were angry that I wouldn’t go to the side of the ring after I spotted the white cone lurking under the rail, but I was really just trying to protect you. Humans can’t run as fast as horses, Mom. Didn’t you find that out when you were chasing my brother around yesterday? For a guy who only won $165 on the track he sure can go when he wants to!

So I’m sorry for almost killing you, but all in all I think it was a good thing I ran when I did. I know I’ve been past that white cone hundreds of times before, but I could feel it looking at me this time, getting ready to pounce. I saved your life, Mom. I really did. Actually, I think you should be thanking me. A big bag of carrots should suffice. I’ll be in my stall, waiting. And bring me some of that hay, won’t you? Not the first cutting dried up stuff you usually feed me, but the soft fluffy green hay that my brother gets. Are you trying to make me starve to death or what?

Love,
Poppy

Bargain Basement: Spring 2011 Edition

As I mentioned in my previous post, it is that time of year again. Time to start sorting through your tack trunk in search of the bottom (always an elusive thing) and take an inventory of what can, and cannot, survive another year. After searching through the internet and various catalogues, drooling over $900 custom field boots and marveling at $10 saddle pads, here are some selections (in no particular order)for those of you who, like me, are on a shoestring budget when it comes to buying new things for your horse.

Sport Performance Breeches. At $29.99 this breeches are a steal and are being offered in both black and tan. Though not necessarily a showstopper, they would be great for any type of schooling. And lets face it - who doesn't need new breeches?

Vespucci Flash Bridle. While a tad pricey at $99.90, this fancy show bridle normally retails for $229.00 so if you are looking for a new show bridle, this may be it! It comes in both brown and oakbark.

Tailored Sportsman Show Shirt. TS is one of the premiere names when it comes to show apparel, so why not snatch up this show shirt for only $39.99?

Absorbine Fly Mask. If your horse is like mine, he eats flymasks for breakfast. At only $9.99, this fly mask by Absorbine is a steal. I've already put in an order for two.

Ladies' Ariat Heritage II Zip Field Boot. My parents recently purchased a pair of these awesome field boots for me. They look much nicer than they do in the picture and fit like a glove. If you are looking for a new pair of show boots and don't want to go custom or $500+, I would highly recommend these. $169.99

Saxon Ladies Equileather Zip Paddock Boots. I just bought these myself after heming and hawing over the winter. For only $28.99 they were a steal.

Fleece Polo Wraps. These $9.00 polo wraps come in the four classic colors: black, royal blue, green, and navy.

Gatsby Nylon Breakaway Halter. This horse owner staple comes in twelve different colors. Even if your horse already has a halter, it is always a good idea to have a backup - especially at horse shows! $12.95

Roma Bell Boots. Lets face it, bell boots go through a lot wear and tear. These BB from Roma come in three sizes and six colors for only $6.40. If you have pull on boots, do your barn manager a favor today and get these velcro ones.

Synthetic Show Gloves. Personally, I am not a fan of riding with gloves but even I know that you need them for the show ring. At $4.99, how could you go wrong?

Please feel free to add any bargains you find in the comments. Happy shopping!

Yes, I realize this picture has nothing to do with bargains... but it was so funny I couldn't resist.

Turtle, Turtle!

So this morning as I was shaking out hay into Tom's stall (one of the older horses who requires his flake of hay to be loosened up so he can chew it more easily) I heard something clunking inside of the flake. This in itself isn't unusual; I've been finding quite a few sticks and pieces of wood in the hay lately. Without thinking I reached in, grabbed the clunking thing, and tugged it out. When it fell free I screamed at the top of my lungs (embarrassing, I know) and jumped a good three feet back. I was looking at a turtle. A honest to goodness, smooshed up but still recognizable, TURTLE. A painted one, by the looks of it. Or maybe a box turtle? To be honest, I don't really know that much about them. I scooped the darn thing up with a pitch fork and tossed it into the woods, hopefully never to be seen again. But this just begs the question… what is the strangest/grossest/weirdest thing you have ever pulled out of the hay?

Fun With Snow Cones

When the "thoroughbred gang" (Darwin in the green blanket, Kinkaid in the red, Harry in the dark blue and Armani in the dark purple) decided to crash out of their regular field, I temporarily put them in the outdoor arena. Twenty minutes later they broke out the cones.

What is your horse's favorite toy to play with?
